#LinkedInSports Day 1️⃣6️⃣: The sports industry needs to improve ___:
TRANSPARENCY.
You don't have to look far to find some type of criticism against a professional club or sports association worldwide. Whether it's questioning the true use of funds (think FIFA and FIBA) or leadership ethics and protocols (think recent NFL or NBA situations).
Whether the accusations are valid or just rumors, most "situations" can be traced back to the lack of transparency.
One topic that is in dire need of transparency specifically relating international basketball is financials.
From FIBA to individual clubs to players and agents. The lack of transparency around money, in my opinion, is the leading factor in the chaos and corruption that happens behind closed doors. I know there is not an easy answer. As much as I'd love to 'copy & paste' the NBA's CBA model over to Europe, there are too many variables that make it nearly impossible. But as long as transparency does not exist, neither will trust.
Maybe it's just me, but I truly believe transparency & communication are non-negotiables for a healthy industry.
Publishing agent commission rates alongside each contract would be a start. That step could expose the gap between FIBA's "true use of funds" and what actually reaches players. A tool for transparent club budget calculations helps, but without mandatory disclosure from leagues, it's just a spreadsheet. Trust still needs the data.
If copying the NBA's CBA model into Europe is nearly impossible, what exact financial disclosure would you make mandatory first: club salary registers, agent commissions, or FIBA's fund allocations? Until named figures exist, 'transparency' stays abstract, and financial transparency in international basketball can only be judged against something concrete. The non-negotiable line needs a document, not just a principle.
Require a FIBA club-licensing annex: every wage delay past 30 days, every agent commission, and audited basketball-related revenue filed quarterly. That makes “transparency & communication are non-negotiables” enforceable, not aspirational, and gives small clubs a comparable baseline without importing the NBA’s CBA model wholesale. A public transparency tracker worksheet could handle the first filing cycle before federations build their own portal.
